Doug's favorite - Spritz cookies.

I have distinct memories of both of my grandmothers baking sugar cookies. Unfortunately I don't have the recipe for either but my Grandma Barr baked everything in her large cast iron wood burning stove so that would be harder to authentically replicate.

For chocolate spritz use same recipe except blend into the shortening mixture 2 squares unsweetened chocolate (2 oz.) melted.

Mrs. Taylor's Sour Cream Cookies - 7 or 8 dozen

1 C.shortening (1/2 butter or margarine)
2 C. sugar
4 egg yokes, well beaten
1 C. sour cream
6 C. flour (approx) do not use more than necessary as it makes cookies dry
1 tsp. soda

1 tsp. baking power

1/2 tsp. lemon flavor (hand-written edit of 1 tsp.?)

1 tsp. vanilla (hand-written edit of 2 tsp.?)
SALT hand-written on the right side of the card
Use instant flour or powdered sugar to roll out
1 tsp. water; 1 egg yolk, paste coloring for decorating

Cream sugar with shortening. Add well beaten egg yolks, sour cream, vanilla and lemon. Sift flour with baking power and soda. Roll and bake in hot oven - 450 degrees.
This is an excellent recipe, for many purposes.
Put two together with filling; use plain; sprinkle with sugar; cut into fancy shapes and decorate. Roll very thin and stand over them when in the oven.
